Alcala 31

Located near Madrid's center Alcala 31 is an interesting space. I understand that it was designed by architect Antonio Palacios in 1935 and scheduled to be constructed immediately however, due to the Spanish Civil War which ran from 1936-1939, the building was not completed until 1943 when it opened as the headquarters of Spain's Merchantile and Industrial Bank. The first floor is a rather big open exhibition space and the second floor is more subdued, has lower cielings, good for more intimate encounters. I don't have any good images of it, but you can get a bit of a sense with this image.

Lie on the Han River, video still, 2005-6

Jewyo Rhii's highly narrative work, which most often emerges from intimate relationships with peculiar people and spaces, deals with the inadequacy and fragility of herself and her art.

The Flag, 2006

The Flag is the second part of the video series about the state-controlled national day ceremonies of the Turkish Republic. Shot during the April 23rdChildren’s Day, which marks the establishment of the new Turkish Parliament, and the official demise of the Ottoman Empire back in 1920, this split screen film documents a pompous patriotic performance devised by elders to be performed by children. Hosted by the mayor and governor of Istanbul, with the participation of a high ranking general, the ceremony features poems and oaths read out loud by primary schools students, while patriotism becomes a hard-lined nationalism. One of them; The Flag is recited passionately by a girl who vows to “destroy the nest of any bird who doesn’t salute [her country’s] flag in flight” and “dig the grave of anyone who doesn’t look at the flag the way [she does].”

Xu Zhen

8,848-1,86 , 2005

Xu Zhen's "recent cumulative video installation 8.848-1,86 (2005)documents an expedition to Mount Everest Xu Zhen, supposedly, underwent with the mission to cut off1,86m of its peak, and finally transport it home to be exhibited in a huge display cabinet… The video, very subtly and with great humor, comments on the Chinese official policy of reclaiming Tibet."

Tobias Rehberger

American Traitor Bitch, 2006

"Rehberger’s work raises the question of authorship and reception by putting the production process in thehands of others and thereby triggering and in a way relying on a misinterpretation of the underlying ideas. Inone of his past projects he made drawings of brand name cars, sent them to Thailand without furtherinstructions and had the producers interpret the sketches. The results were cars with the instantlyrecognizable features of the original brands but showing flaws that revealed the sculptures as copies.

In the “American Traitor Bitch” exhibition, Rehberger collaborates with Danish-Vietnamese artist Danh Vo.Rehberger extends his method by allowing Vo to step in not on the production level but on the conceptuallevel, thereby pushing the limits of his strategies. Danh Vo’s father’s unique story of survival after the VietnamWar serves as inspiration for the entire project. Rehberger used Danh Vo's ideas and recollections of his father's story, while Vo stayed true to Rehberger's distinctive style, making the final creation a result of theirdifferent views and interpretations."

Tzay Chuen Lim

I Wanted To Bring Mike Over, 2005

Lim Tzay-Chuen 林載春 was born in Singapore in 1972.

He lives and works in Singapore.

Lim has a longstanding interest in the manipulation of existing social and institutional relationships and structures. His work combines seemingly contradictory notions of invisibility and architecture, romanticism and administration. By creating particular situations, or acting as a catalyst, the artist aims to shift the dynamics, often taken for granted, that construct our everyday experiences. Lim's interventions are often imperceptible, or unfold over time, and hence it is difficult to assess the successes or failures of his projects. A number of them have yet to be realised, but sometimes it is the process of negotiation that forms part, if not all, of the work, such as his attempt to uproot and ship the 80ton Merlion statue from Singapore to Venice for the 51st Venice Biennale.
